Kirsten Dunst on Lars Von Trier’s Nazi joke

It was clear from the initial press conference, where Melancholia director Lars Von Trier made his Nazi joke, that Kirsten Dunst was not impressed. Now Kirsten has spoken out about it and tried to defend Lars, while at the same time worrying about the reaction.

Lars joked in a Cannes press conference that he was a Nazi and could understand where Hitler was coming from, in response to an inappropriate question. At the time, Dunst had a look of complete shock on her face and those images made themselves around the internet.
Kirsten explained, "Well yeah, you could see my face. I was choking, because I'm watching a friend having a meltdown. What he's saying is horrendous in a roomful of press. He was asked an inappropriate question about his family and his response was to make a joke about it. But no one laughed and he just kept unravelling."
She added, "There were a lot of us sitting there. There was Stellan [Skarsgård], John [Hurt], Charlotte [Gainsbourg] and no one said something. No one wanted to help. I was the only one to lean in to Lars and get him to stop." Melancholia is out now.
