Coldplay frontman Chris Martin once recorded some vocals for the chorus of the 2004 hit single Dry Your Eyes by The Streets but that version has never been released. According to Mike Skinner, in his book The Story of The Streets, Chris’ record label EMI intervened, claiming that Chris Martin did not like how he sounded on the record and they were worried that the song would not be a hit.
Skinner explained, “When I wrote Dry Your Eyes I thought the chorus would work well with Chris singing it, so I sent it to him. We met up in at Primrose Hill and recorded the vocal, which I was really pleased with.”
He added, “But then the guy from EMI said he didn't think the song was a hit, and Chris didn't like the sound of his own voice on it, so that version got pulled.”
Mike continued, “Once the song was done, the whole thing changed from being something that was between us, to something that was between our record labels.” The collaboration of Chris Martin and The Streets happened due to the fact that Chris Martin’s wife Gwyneth Paltrow was a big fan of the band.
The Mike Skinner book, The Story of The Streets is out now.
